Artek: Armchair 41 (Paimio), Stool 60, Stool 60 Varvunraita
Artek is a Finnish furniture company established in 1935 by Alvar and Aino Aalto, Nils Nils-Gustav Hahl and Maire Gullichsen. The name “Artek” was chosen because it is a synthesis of art and technology - one emotional, the other rational.
Today the brand is more art and tech than ever. Just recently Artek introduced the 2nd Cycle for their well-known classics. At the Milan Furniture Fair 2008 Artek dressed some of its old classics with Marimekko’s new spring and summer prints.
The lounge of the HARDCORE exhibition will also be furnished with updated Artek Classics. They are all dressed in white – as white is the purest, most reduced way of highlighting the extraordinarily elegant, yet revolutionary forms that Alvar Aalto created at the beginning of the modernist era.
This year Artek also celebrates the 75-year-old Stool 60, which symbolizes the originality and longevity of Artek products. Designed by Alvar Aalto in 1932–33, this innovative, yet simple stool is considered the archetype of functional furniture. During the New York Design Week 2008, an installation of these classic Artek stools will be on display in Meatpacking District, Manhattan to pay tribute to this true design icon.
