Marimekko: Unelmia, Kevätjuhla
Marimekko is a leading Finnish textile and clothing design company that designs, manufactures and markets high-quality clothing, interior decoration textiles, bags and other accessories under the Marimekko brand, both in Finland and abroad. Marimekko was founded by Armi Ratia in 1951. From the start, the company’s mission has been to create practical and inspiring unisex products to enliven the everyday existence of modern people.
The Marimekko fabrics presented in HARDCORE are titled Kevätjuhla [‘Spring Fest’] and Unelmia [Dreams]. Both fabrics are designed by Miina Äkkijyrkkä, a famous Finnish visual artist who is known for her lively and playful cow motives – both in sculptures and in painting. This time we see the cows printed onto fabric.
The Kevätjuhla fabric pays homage to spring and freedom, and to those who dare jump into anything new and exciting. The joy of calves rushing through spring fields is embodied in the fresh background colors of the design: a glowing orange, a cool green and a bold turquoise. Another one of Miina Äkkijyrkkä’s fabrics, Unelmia, is a charming art print, which is at once both gentle and rough, like the intensity of a life inspired by dreams.
