Noa Bembibre: Glass Knives
Noa Bembibre (b. 1981) has received an MA in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country and an MA in Applied Art and Design from the University of Art and Design Helsinki. Originally born in Spain, Bembibre is currently based in Finland where she combines her independent artistic work with professional graphic design at Muotohiomo Design Studio in Helsinki.
Bembibre’s work on display In HARDCORE is titled Glass Knifes. Bembibre’s glass knives combine the very ancient roots of design – transforming rocks into tools – with innovative contemporary kitchenware design. Glass knifes were historically used due to their characteristic sharpness. In her design, Bembibre has given these old blades a modern artistic form. Combining the raw qualities of the Stone Age tools with the glossy, transparent and polished surface of glass, the Glass Knives (2005) turn into something oddly fascinating, yet still familiar.
The Glass Knives are part of The New Dining Luxury joint project with a group of 13 University Art and Design students combining eating, luxury and design. The project received the 1st prize in the best product design category at the IMM Cologne Furniture Fair 2005.
