The design agency Kokoro & Moi specializes in brand identity and development, creative direction, art direction, graphic design and interactive design. The agency was originally founded in 2001
as a branch office to the Syrup NYC office by graphic designers Teemu Suviala and Antti Hinkula who had both worked for the office in New York as students. Until 2007, it operated under the name Syrup Helsinki. Hinkula and Suviala both graduated from the Institute of Design at Lahti Polytechnic in 2001.
The work of Kokoro & Moi transcends the borders of graphic design covering both traditional and digital channels. The designers say that their working methods are reminiscent of sampling that is used in electronic music, but instead of sound, they combine pictures that they have produced themselves.
Kokoro’ is Japanese for ‘heart/mind’, ‘Moi’ is French for ‘me’ and Finnish for ‘hello/bye’. The name reflects Suviala’s and Hinkula’s philosophy in design: by connecting ideas that haven´t been seen together before, you can create something unique and new. For Kokoro & Moi, 1+1=3, and sometimes even more than that. Drawing on unexpected combinations, Kokoro & Moi is known for its innovative and expressive approach towards the entire modern media palette.
Kokoro & Moi believes in originality, innovation and the power of great design in brand strategies. The designers’ original ideas have earned them several awards over the years. In 2005, Hinkula and Suviala were together awarded the Young Designer of The Year prize by Design Forum Finland. They were the first graphic designers ever to win this prize.
Kokoro & Moi 's work for the international clientele of commercial players ranging from cultural and public institutions and start-ups to multinationals such as Mattel, Nokia and Toyota comprises anything from corporate image to products, from digital media to spatial and conceptual design. Suviala and Hinkula are also the masterminds behind the art group / clothing label Nada Go-Go.
