Mikko Paakkanen: Medusa Chandelier (SAAS Instruments)
Mikko Paakkanen (b. 1975) holds a Master’s degree from the University of Art and Design, Helsinki. Together with Mika Ihanus, he runs a design studio titled Studio Helsinki Finland. He has also created several successful furniture designs for the Finnish furniture company Avarte.
Paakkanen’s work is guided by curiosity and experimentation. In HARDCORE Paakkanen presents an innovative chandelier concept under the title Medusa. True to its name, the Medusa Chandelier (2007) has the ability to change its form in an instant. The shape of the lamp morphs from nearly straight, vertical strands of light to a round globe. To create this changing form, Paakkanen has used LED and fiber optic technology provided by the Finnish lighting design company SAAS Instruments.
